Tardy Policy
Written by Ken Stenek
Thursday, 13 January 2011
We now hava a policy that one-hundred or more tardies means no rec for a week for jr. high and high school.  So far we haven't lost our rec yet.

Tardies are when people are late to school or classes.  If a student has 6 tardies, that student is considered a saboteur.  Every saboteur spends twenty minutes of detention per tardy in the office after school until their time is made up.  Some people try to be a saboteur on purpose.  I once was a saboteur.  I had to stay in detention in the office for two hours and twenty minutes.  Almost every week we have a saboteur.

One week we had ninety-eight tardies but there was another week we had one hundred fourteen tardies.  It was decided that if there is a saboteur we subtract their tardies.  For instance when we had one hundred fourteen tardies we subtracted the saboteurs and had less than 100 tardies so we still had rec that next week.

Our lowest tardies was November 29 through December 3.  My prediction is that we will have over 3000 tardies this year.  The week of January 4-7 we had 71 tardies.  Every day we have about 20 tardies.

Christmas Week
Written by Ken Stenek
Tuesday, 11 January 2011

Every year on December 26-31st during Christmas week, the men grades 7 through adults are split into two teams and play traditional games  Christmas week is a lof of fun if you put your mind to it.  The traditional games teach men and develop winter survival skills.

The games are played right after the awards ceremony each night.  The games begin with women's games. The women play high school girls through adults.  The women's games tend to be fun party games and are less traditional.  After each game, the women get a can of pop and a goody bag with hard candy.  Long ago the women didn't get to play games but the ommunity decided that they would play their games and men there's.  After the games the men participate in their games.

The traditional men's games were developed by our ancestors years ago to develop survival skills.  The finger pulls are played to develop strength so that if you were pulling in a seal and had to hook it with one of your fingers, you could still get your seal.

Ice Fishing
Written by Ken Stenek

Have you ever been ice fishing? Do you know what ice fishing is? We ice fish during the winter on our lagoon; we make medium size holes to get the fish out. Augers are used to make the holes, they're rotating shovels. Our fish hooks are handmade with wood and braided fishing line or thread. We enjoy ice fishing every year. Even when it is cold, some people still ice fish. The type of fish we get during the winter are; smelts, tom cods, bull-heads, white fish, and silver fish.

It can actually take a long time to catch fish, up to 3-5 minutes sometimes less. You just wait there and jigging with your fish hook. When you feel a push or a pull, a 50% chance it's a fish. If you didn't catch one, then it probably swam away.

The person who I think fishes the most would have to probably be Sue Nayokpuk. She loves ice fishing, even in cold weathers. Ice fishing is fun, Sue catches a lot of fish, because she probaly fishes half of the day. She goes home with fresh fish, then thaw them out, and cook/bake some. We would freeze ours, but both ways are good.
