Larry Smith

Welcome to Shishmaref School, home of the Northern Lights! My name is Larry Smith and I am the principal of our great school.

I am happy to join the knowledgeable and dedicated staff here at Shishmaref School. As an educator I have had many rich experiences including time teaching 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th grade History. I have also facilitated AVID training, Fundamental Five, chess club and student council.

Shishmaref School has a strong tradition of focusing on doing what is best for each child academically, socially, and emotionally. I look forward to working together in partnership to serve the students and families of our community.

My constant companion is my service animal Sebastian. He is a 65 pound Standard Poodle who has five years service in a school setting. I am married to a career educator who teaches 3rd grade in Arizona. My hobbies are the daily playing of my trumpet and playing chess.

I am originally from Southeastern Oklahoma. I grew up on a farm/ranch where we raised cattle & horses. Love and treasure the memories, experience, and lessons learned there. I have been in Alaska since 2011 and have loved my experience thus far.

I hope and pray that I may be a positive influence and assist the students of Shishmaref during my tenure. Feel free to contact me at anytime if I am needed.

I am originally from Shishmaref and have been teaching in Shishmaref since I graduated from college. I have 4 children, Edward, Carter, Elizabeth, and Cohen. I enjoy camping, boating, ice fishing, and sewing.

Hello! My name is Nicole Klein and this is my first year teaching first grade. This is also my first year in Alaska. I am from Long Island, New York and I graduated with my undergrad from SUNY, Brockport. I enjoy dancing, doing puzzles, and watching sunsets.

My name is Amy L. Eningowuk and I'm from Ohio. I attended Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. I graduated in 2009 with my Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Interventions Specialist, and a K-12 Reading Specialist Certification. In college I also studied abroad in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany; where I taught English to second graders. I moved to Shishmaref in August 2009. My first two years were spent teaching ECE. I also taught one year of 1st grade. However, this year is my eighth year teaching second grade. I married Barret Eningowuk in 2015. We love spending time together with our kids Trevor, Madalynn, Hayden, and Theo. An interesting fact about me is that I'm a former competitive swimmer and swim team coach.

"Hello, my name is Matt Brown. I will be teaching 3rd grade this school year. I am so excited to be returning to Shishmaref after my previous stint here. Shishmaref is one of my favorite places in the world.

I was born and raised in Hawaii. I have taught 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st grade as an elementary teacher. Before that, I worked as an educational assistant in Title 1 Reading and Special Education. Before I got into education, I was a resident care manager at an assisted living facility.

I have coached high school and college basketball in Oregon and Alaska. Coaching basketball is one of my passions.

My bachelor's degree is in Philosophy from Linfield University. I have a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Concordia Portland and a Masters of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia Irvine. I am currently pursuing Educational Administration from American College of Education.

Hello Shishmaref Family!

My name is Ms. Christine Wilson and I will be your new 5th grade teacher. I am excited to meet you on the first day of school! I have lived in Spokane, Washington over 30 years. Last school year, I interned, and was a student teacher in the fourth grade. During the summer I completed my Masters in Education, making this my first-year teaching. I look forward to new experiences and relationships. Children have a curiosity and a manner of looking at the world around them in profound ways, which changes their perceptions of their own futures. I love being a part of this discovery process.

My name is Brian Celce and I was born and raised in Ohio. I am married to a Colombian and we have four children. I am teaching Middle School English at Shishmaref this year. This is my sixth year living and working in Alaska. My interests include reading, writings, watching classic films, and travel.

I was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. My hobbies include camping, travel, downhill and cross-country skiing. This is my first year in Shishmaref. I'm excited to teach math and science to our middle school students. My goal is to give them the skills to be successful in high school. With my aviation background, I am excited to introduce students to basic piloting skills on our flight simulator.

My name is Nuiluk, Roben Itchoak. I grew up in Nome and went to college in Nome, Sitka, and Oregon. My husband and I moved to Shishmaref with four of our kids in the summer of 2019. I hope to inspire students to engage in lifelong learning and to help them become better readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators as they learn about the history of the world and the United States.

Secondary Math Teacher

Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Brown county, St. Mary's Hospital, on October 11, 1965. I was adopted by Robert and Helen Young of Baraboo, Wisconsin at about 1 month of age. The Baraboo area has a state park 2 miles outside of town, Circus World Museum, the Al Ringling theater, a zoo, North Continent Railway Museum with real steam trains, and is 15 minutes from Wisconsin Dells and 45 minutes from the State Capitol in Madison, WI. South Central Wisconsin was a great place to grow up.

I have one sister, Shelly; A nephew, Josh; and a great nephew, Wyatt. No children- never married.

I attended the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater and graduated in 1991, with a BSE in Mathematics/Physics. I also earned two associates degrees. - Microcomputer Specialist and Network Specialist.

I have had several jobs in my lifetime: Delivering papers, de-tasseling corn, stocking shelves in a drug store, hardware store, factory, one-stop shop gas station, managed a Pizza Hut, managed my parent's tavern, half-way house manager, tutored, trained, etc.

I have enjoyed living and teaching in Shishmaref for eleven years. I look forward to the upcoming school year.

Shaun Milligan

Reading/Language Arts Teacher/Athletic Director

Shaun Milligan is the high school ELA instructor at Shishmaref School. He is a graduate of Burns Jr./Sr. High School in Burns, Wyoming. Milligan earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Hastings College where he double-majored in Philosophy and International Studies. He then earned a Master of Arts degree at the University of Wyoming in the American Studies department. As well, he has completed a course of study at the l'Institut de Catholique de Paris in Paris, France in French and Photography. Milligan is an avid University of Wyoming athletics fan and he enjoys reading.


Ken Stenek

Science Teacher

Taught in Shishmaref for 21 years. Originally from Elma, WA. I moved to Alaska in 1995 to attend UAF. I completed my B.S. in General Biology, in 1997 and my M.A.T. in 1999. I accepted a teaching position here in Shishmaref at that time and have been here since. I married Lisa Stenek in October 2001. We have seven children together. All are attending school this year from pre-k through 11th grade. In my spare time I documented the bird species that use the surrounding area and so far have over 125 different species. I also enjoy subsistence activities like salmon fishing and berry picking.

HI, my name is Tammi Hausman and I am the Special Education teacher for the Elementary school, here in Shishmaref.  I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina Kansas, where I majored in Criminal Justice.  I then earned a Master of Science degree at the University of Nebraska in Child, Youth and Family Studies.  As well, I earned a Master of Science degree in Special Education teaching at Grand Canyon University.  I am a NFL football fan, particularly the Baltimore Ravens and I love to read.

Metal Shop Teacher

I grew up in southwest Alaska, i've been a commercial fisherman all my life for salmon, cod, and crab(Deckhand, engineer, and Captain), welder, mechanic, and medic since 1988, pilot since 1984. I taught Emergency Medical, welding and small engine mechanics for UAF, UAS, Coast Guard Marine Medical, Kanakanak Hospital, and South Central Foundation. I have been working at the Shishmaref School since 2010. I received my NASP Certificate for Teaching CTE in 2013.

Hello, my name is Polly. I have a dog named Maxwell. Maxwell is partially blind so I am his seeing eye human. He is my traveling companion. We have served in the military, travelled while teaching and exploring the world. We have family in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Montreal, Quebec.

Hi, I am Paul Bridges and I moved from Sierra Mountains in California. I have a great passion for

counseling and am excited to be a part of the Shishmaref community. I enjoy skiing, surfing, hunting,

and fishing. I have had the opportunity to earn two master’s and a PhD. I am also ordained in the

Presbyterian church, I’m a Clinical Psychologist, and a licensed professional ski instructor with PSIA.

Librarian/Migrant Education

My name is Darlene Tocktoo, born and raised in Shishmaref, Alaska. This school year, I will be teaching Library Skills for grades K-6. I also will be continuing the Migrant Education Program, to help fund the necessary programs for our site. The library will have a lot more space for instructional time and be more library friendly. The computers will not be available, however, there will be a compute lab on the elementary side. I'm looking forward to the upcoming school year this fall.

Hi my name is Nicole Wintermeyer. I moved up to Alaska in the fall of 2022 with my daughter Phoenix and my husband Dustin. We moved from Seattle, Washington where I have lived my whole life. I have a bachelor in Elementary Education and social studies and a Masters in Special Education. I enjoy doing puzzles, cross stitch, and diamond painting in my spare time.

Helenmarie Bessi (Senungetuk) Sinnok - Bilingual/Bicultural Aide since 2008. Married to Warren, mother of 4 children - all who graduated from this school. I am a grandmother of 2 boys and 1 girl. Born in Anchorage, lived most of my life in Shishmaref since I was 7. Graduated from the Shishmaref School. I love being outdoors, I enjoy the subsistence lifestyle, and preparing our foods. Dog mushing and racing off and on since the age of 16, snow machining, boating, camping, hunting, fishing.
