📣 Shishmaref School Needs Substitute Staff!
It takes a whole team to keep our school running—and when one of our regular staff members has to be out, the show must go on! 💚🤍
We are looking for community members who are interested in joining our substitute list for the 2026–2027 school year.
Substitutes are an important part of our school team and help us continue providing a safe, supportive, and consistent school day for our students when regular staff are away.
We may need substitutes in a variety of areas, including:

📚 Classroom Aides/Paraprofessionals
🍽️ Kitchen Staff

…and other areas as needs arise!
Interested in subbing? Please complete an online application here:

💚 Good Afternoon, Shishmaref Community & Families!
We are so happy to welcome our students back into the building today! It has been wonderful seeing their faces, hearing their voices in the hallways, and having our school full of students again. 💚✨
We know there have been a lot of questions regarding student enrollment and registration, especially with the enrollment process moving to a digital format this year.
We also know that we have students attending school whose online enrollment may not yet be fully completed. Please don’t worry—your student can still attend school while you work to complete the enrollment process.
Families have a 30-day grace period from the first day of school to obtain any missing records or documents and upload them into the online enrollment system.
During this grace period, we ask families to please continue working on their student’s enrollment and make sure all required information, records, and documents are submitted before the end of the 30 days.
If you are unsure whether your student’s enrollment is complete, are missing documents, or need help navigating the online system, please reach out to the school.
We are happy to help families through this new process and answer questions along the way.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all adjust to the new digital enrollment process. Most importantly, thank you for sending your kiddos back to us. We are excited to have them here and are looking forward to a great school year! 💚
✨ We’re glad you’re here. You belong at SHH.✨

Shined up and ready for our Northern Lights. 💚✨
The floors are shining, the Northern Lights are ready, and tomorrow this gym—and our school—will be filled with the people who make it all matter: our students.
We’ve spent the last several days preparing classrooms, organizing, cleaning, planning, and getting all the little things ready. Now, we’re just missing our kiddos.
Tomorrow, we officially welcome our Shishmaref Northern Lights back through the doors for the first day of school! 🌌
We hope every student walks in knowing one thing from the very beginning:
You belong here.
You are important here.
And we are so happy you’re here. 💚🤍
See you tomorrow, Northern Lights! ✨

🌟 2026-2027 School Calendar 🌟
Hello, Shishmaref!
We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying time with family, fishing, hunting, berry picking, and all the opportunities that subsistence season brings. We hope you’re making memories, staying safe, and enjoying every moment.
As we begin looking ahead to a new school year, we wanted to share the Bering Strait School District 2026-2027 School Calendar.
📚 The first day of school for students will be Thursday, August 27, 2026.
We’ll continue sharing important back-to-school information throughout the summer, including registration details, Open House information, school supplies, and other updates as we get closer to the start of the school year.
For now, keep enjoying your summer, take care of one another, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to Shishmaref School in August! 💜💚
The district calendar is attached.

Dear Shishmaref School Community,
As my year as Principal of Shishmaref School comes to a close, I want to express my sincere gratitude to our students, families, staff, and community.
It has been an honor to serve this school and to be part of a community that cares deeply about its children. Shishmaref is a special place, and I am thankful for the relationships, lessons, and memories I will carry with me.
Acknowledgments
To the elders in the community, thank you for sharing your wisdom. I learned a lot simply by having kuupianaaziġa with elders who have a lifetime of memories and experiences to share. Growing up in the South, we were taught to listen in the presence of elders. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me.
To our school board members and AEC members who provided support and feedback throughout the year, thank you. You were strong voices for the community and helped our administrative team make meaningful decisions.
To our staff, thank you for your hard work, resilience, and dedication. Working with someone who has a “Type A” personality is not always easy, but you all sure did make my job easier. The elderly in Louisiana always said “sure did” when I was coming up, so I say it with love and appreciation. Thank you for giving our administrative team a chance to lead. One thing I particularly loved was that when we had meals, get-togethers, or holiday parties, nobody talked about work. Oh, and even when I know I took too long to finish cooking (since literally Day 1), you never told me =].
To our families and community members, thank you for your support and partnership. We were truly motivated to start the year when we had such a strong turnout at Open House. I also loved how the community was always the perfect balance of competitive and positive at student athletic events and city league games. It was also pretty special how everyone says, “Welcome to Shishmaref,” when someone visits for the first time. I have been to a few communities in Alaska, but nobody is as friendly as SHH.
Most importantly, to our students, thank you for the joy, energy, and purpose you bring to the school each day. Whether it was kindergarten and first grade students tackling me at open gym, eighth grade students teaching me Iñupiaq when their bilingual teacher was out, or high school students beating me in a game of Around the World at lunchtime, seeing you enjoy coming to school made the year meaningful. When I am around other principals, I always mention your great behavior, strong attendance, and wonderful personalities.
I am proud of the work we have done together, and I hope Shishmaref School continues to grow, strengthen, and serve students well for many years to come.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve this community.
With appreciation,
Gary Perkins, Ed.D. aka Dr. P.
Principal, Shishmaref School ’26
