🌟 Shishmaref Shines Bright! 🌟

We are proud to share that Shishmaref School won the Alaska State Red Ribbon Campaign with this year’s theme:

“Life Is a Puzzle — Solve It Drug Free.”

Our students competed in October 2025, joining schools across Alaska in promoting healthy, drug-free choices. Classrooms participated by designing meaningful door decorations that reflected student voice, creativity, and a united commitment to making positive, healthy decisions.

Due to weather and travel availability, the state representatives were unable to travel to Shishmaref immediately following the competition. However, this month we were finally able to celebrate together as two military representatives traveled to our community to formally present the award in person. We were also honored with a congratulatory video message from the Alaska Department of Health Commissioner.

It was a powerful and proud moment for our students to be recognized for their leadership and creativity.

This recognition belongs to our entire community — our students, staff, families, and supporters who continue to uplift one another. Together, we are raising leaders who shine bright like the Northern Lights and choose a healthy future.

We are incredibly proud of our school and the message our students are sending across the state.

Due to current weather conditions, parents/guardians may begin picking up students now. All students will need to be picked up or safely brought home by 2:00 PM.

If you are unable to come yourself, please arrange a safe ride for your student. If transportation is still a challenge, an older sibling or trusted family member may pick up your child.

For safety reasons, we do not want any students walking home alone in these conditions.

Please call the school if you have any questions or need assistance making arrangements. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe. 💚

Our community had 3 incredible competitors representing Shishmaref, and they made us SO proud! 🌟

📚 Nellie tied for 11th place — and this was her first year competing as a 4th grader! What an amazing start and a bright future ahead! 👏💫

📚 Veronica showed major growth, improving her placement from last year and tying for 2nd place this year! Way to level up through hard work and determination! 💪✨

🏆📚 Aisonna came prepared and proved it — she is the 2026 BSSD Spelling Bee Champion!!! 👑🎉

🔥 Fun (and proud!) fact:
Aisonna’s win marks the 5th Shishmaref championship in the past 7 years! Talk about a tradition of excellence! 💜💚
